Cat Vaccinations in Somerset

Cat

Vaccinating your cat gives you peace of mind that your furry friend is protected from common diseases. What's more, it not only safeguards your own pet, but also prevents other animals from catching diseases as well thanks to "herd immunity". Our vets provide first-rate feline care and advice to make sure your pet is prepared for whatever life has to offer.

How Do Vaccines Work?

Cat vaccines feature a harmless form of a bacterium or virus that causes a particular ailment in felines. They work by building up the body's immune system in a safe and controlled way.

Then, if your cat gets exposed to the disease in the course of everyday life, the immune system is already prepared for the appropriate reaction.

When Should Kittens or Cats Be Vaccinated?

Bridge Vet recommends that your pets should receive a primary vaccination course when they are young, which should be followed up with boosters throughout their adult life. The primary vaccination can be delivered to kittens as young as nine weeks old as the maternal antibodies from the mother starts to wane, the second course should be given three weeks afterwards.

We also strongly recommend that kittens are vaccinated before they mix with other animals. Cats should socialise with other animals while young to aid normal development, so it is important to have them vaccinated as early as possible to aid this. We advise kittens to have completed the primary course before allowing them outdoors.

Booster vaccinations are then required because the immune response naturally fades over time. Typically, they are given annually, although this depends on the vaccine in question. If you are unsure when you should vaccinate your cat, please contact us. If your cat will be going into a cattery, most will require your cat to be up to date with vaccinations and provide proof of vaccination.
